A SIMPLE LOOK AT HOW TO READ ODU IFA

(originally Posted by Baba Sola on April 19, 2009 at 9:34am in Egbe Ifa / http://egbeorishaye.ning.com)

This info was taught to us by Awise Agbaiye Dr. Wande Abimbola.

Odu Ifa is set up in 6 parts.
1. Babalawos that divined for client.
2. Client divined for
3. clients problem/situation
4. ebo prescribed
5. ebo done or not
6. what happened to client when ebo was done or not.

simple example
OTURA OGBE

1. Sosoro Awo Abata
2. Divined for Olorireapesin
3. when he was coming from heaven to earth and wanted to have good luck
4. he was told to make ebo and praise Ori
5. he did so as hee was told by Sosoro Awo abata
6. he became a person with a good ori and people praised and supported his life

tip:
all names in verse before Adifa fun (divined for) are the names of the Babalawos that divined for the client

  1. E pele O eOsw,

from my teaching i understood the same, and experienced the same. at the initial reading the awo would cast for the odu. if ebo is required the odu would be invoked when doing the ebo...

    1. Babalawos that divined for client.

this is the same way at which Fayomi and I were taught to write our experiences / family experiences in odu format. something like family odu... to pass down to the children etc.

    Example:

    ogbe-owonrin

    "ogbe, satisfy your home
    before you satisfy outsiders
    one's home will support one
    before outsiders give support"

(this is a learning session so i'm going to shoot/share some ideas:)

the awo/awos are at times (not taken as a rule) coded by character and or a wise saying that directly applies to the situation at hand. also at times we may see the character or attribute of the awo in place of a direct name.

"they were the ones who cast ifa for porogodo
    the woman of akoko"

here the identity of the client is also sheltered or coded (not a general rule)-
i could imagine, this would be good for cutting down all the gossip as well as
putting the bitness of the client out there. however, the character of the client is linked to the odu; i know that akoko is woodpecker.

"they advised akoko to offer sacrifice on behalf of porogodo
    he refused"

i believe here is where the ebo is prescribed and obviously refused...

"the aftermath of refusal to offer sacrifice
the evil involved in refusal to perform ritual
don't you see how ifa had come to pass like a dream?"

i believe that this is the final results / experience after ebo was denied,
also if we look deeper, though the ebo was refused the lesson still prevails (lol)
    something we should think about...

the layout is not set in stone, but gives us a general idea of how odu ifa is read.
